Educational Scholarship Information
for Graduating Year 2008

Eligibility Periods
World War I - April 6, 1917 - November 11, 1918  
World War II - December 7, 1941 - December 31, 1946 
 
Korean War - June 25, 1950 - January 31, 1955 
 
Vietnam War - February 28, 1961 - May 7, 1975 
 
Grenada/Lebanon - August 24, 1982 - July 31, 1984 
 
Panama - December 20, 1989 - January 31, 1990 
 
Persian Gulf - August 2, 1990 to the date of cessation of hostilities as determined by the Government of the United States (those currently serving are included)

There are two levels of scholarships available.  Please read the following information carefully to determine your eligibility for each level.  If you meet the criteria, continue with the application process.

Department of California Scholarships: Applicant's parent must have served or be serving in the United States Armed Forces during any of the following eligible periods.  Applicants for any Department of California Scholarships must be a resident of the State of California and planning on attending a California college or university in the Fall 2007.  (Exception: Lucille Ganey Scholarship) 

National Scholarships: Applicant's parent must have served or be serving in the United States Armed Forces during any of the following eligible periods.
 

Veterans: Re-entry scholarships are available to those who are serving or have served in the United States Armed Forces.

The Process
1.
Student obtains and completes application. (Note: Online applications are two pages in length.)
2.
Student locates local or closest American Legion Auxiliary Unit and submits application.
3.
Unit Committee selects one applicant for each type of scholarship and forwards applications to the District Chairman. (Note: Only one applicant from any one school will be selected in each category at the Unit level.  Applicant is eligible to win one scholarship only.  Other limitations may apply.)
4.
District Committee selects one applicant for each type of scholarship and forwards applications to the Department Chairman.
5.
Department Committee selects one winning applicant per scholarship offered and announces the winners during the June Convention.  Winners are notified by the committee.
6a.
In the case of National Scholarships, Department selects one applicant for each type of scholarship and forwards to the Division.
6b.
Division Committee selects one applicant for each type of scholarship and forwards to the National Chairman.
6c.
National Committee announces the winners during the National Convention in August 2008.  Winners are notified by the committee.

Avoid delays and possible elimination -
Applications sent to the Department Office will not be accepted
Do not contact Department Office concerning status of application and/or award
We do not track applications
Any applications printed prior to August 1, 2007 are incorrect

Department Scholarships Offered
General Scholarship Application
$2,000 One 2-year scholarship each year payable at $1,000 per year.

Fields of Endeavor : Not specified  
Pre-requisites : Senior in high school or graduate of an accredited high school who has not been able to begin college due to circumstances of illness or finance; must need financial assistance to continue educational pursuits; must attend a California college or university 
 
Deadline: Applications must be submitted to the local Unit on or before March 16

Lucille Ganey Memorial Scholarship Application
$500— One scholarship at $500 Fields of Endeavor : Not specified  
Pre-requisites :
Must be a senior in a California high school at time of application and will be attending Stephens College in Missouri or a student already attending Stephens College
Deadline: Applications must be submitted to the local Unit on or before March 16

Continuing / Re-entry Student Scholarship Application

$1,000— Three scholarships each year payable at $1,000 each

$500— Two scholarships each year payable at $500 each

Pre-requisites :
Must be a continuing or re-entry college student; must attend a California college or university
Deadline: Applications must be submitted to the local Unit on or before March 16

Past Presidents' Parley Nursing Scholarship Application

Pre-requisites :
Must be entering into or a continuing student in a nursing program.  You are the wife, husband, widow, widower or child of a veteran or you are a veteran
Deadline: Applications must be submitted to the local Unit on or before

Past Department Presidents' Junior Scholarship Application

Pre-requisites :
Must have consecutive membership as a Junior for three years and be current with membership in the American Legion Auxiliary.  Must be a child, grandchild, or great grandchild of a veteran.  Must currently be in high school and attending college in the next academic year; California resident (see form for details)

Applications must be submitted to the Unit in which the Junior holds membership by April 13

Non-Traditional Scholarship Application

Must be a member of The American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary or Sons of The American Legion for the two preceding years, continuing or re-entry college student, undergraduate

Department Non-Traditional Scholarship

No Application to be Filed

Pre-requisites : This scholarship will be awarded to the Department of California National Scholarship Candidate if that person's application does not win the National President's Scholarship

Pre-requisites :
Must be a senior in high school at time of application; must be a son/daughter of a veteran who served in the armed forces during eligibility periods for membership in The American Legion; previous recipients not eligible; fifty (50) hours of community service

Department President's Scholarship Application

Pre-requisites : This scholarship will be awarded to the Department of California National Scholarship Candidate if that person's application does not win the National President's Scholarship

Spirit of Youth Scholarship Application

Pre-requisites :
Must be a Junior Member of the American Legion Auxiliary with three consecutive years membership including current card year; must continue membership during four-year-scholarship period; must be in the 12th grade in an accredited high school in the United States or its territories; must not have attended an institution of higher learning; must apply through the Unit in which her dues are paid

Spirit of Youth Scholarship Application

Pre-requisites :  This scholarship will be awarded to the Department of California Spirit of Youth Scholarship Candidate if that person's application does not win the National Spirit of Youth Scholarship

Girl Scout Achievement Application
$1,000 & Trip to National Convention
to Receive Award
(Reno, Nevada - August 2007)
One scholarships each year, payable at $500 per year upon entering college or university
Pre-requisites : Open to Girl Scouts Only; applicant must have received Girl Scout Gold Award; must be active member of religious institution having received appropriate religious emblem, Cadette or Senior Scout level; must demonstrate practical citizenship in religious institution, school, Girl Souting, and community; must submit four letters of recommendation - religious institution, school, community, and scouting
